oh, I see :-)
If your purpose is to "just detect" something around, the cheapest one 
would be okay. Unfortunately I don't know many of them, the serial port 
adapter from Merlin cost around 100 EUR (from UK) (10 or 100mt 
available, at around the same price, battery operated).
PC dongle, much cheaper, can't work stand alone, I'm afraid. Otherwise, 
if they would "signal" if when just powered, that would be perfect. You 
could try one, giving it only the 5Vcc on USB cable, from a battery.
