i've been on the phone with MS for 3 hours (not done yet).
they reproduced the problem with my tiny test page containing 20 
"empty" applets (no code):
         http://OmnipotenceSoftware.com/x.htm
it actually crashed most of their PCs.
they say that this will be looked into by their development team 
(hopefully to be fixed by next release).
