MS is in "volunteer" mode right now, but has announced that it will be
mandatory or all updates will cease. If you can run without ANY updates
at all, you might get around that issue. But as I found out, if it
detects an "invalid" install, sooner or later you will get contacted
about it and "offered" the ability to make it legal.

My two cents - not worth the $149 it takes to get a license.

All my servers and PC's have been upgraded to valid licenses.
