Mark,

The system restore feature in Windows XP is really a last resort...  I don't
recommend any of our clients to use that feature.

However, there's a few things that will probably make your life easier:

1.  Use an imaging program (like Norton Ghost) to be able to restore 
your entire
system to a once-usable state more reliably.

2.  Use a virtual machine (like VMWare) to run a different OS without 
having to
re-install your main OS.

3.  Changing the hardware in your computer may qualify you for an OEM 
license of
Windows XP which could be far cheaper than the upgrade.
