Mark, The system restore feature in Windows XP is really a last resort... I don't recommend any of our clients to use that feature. However, there's a few things that will probably make your life easier: 1. Use an imaging program (like Norton Ghost) to be able to restore your entire system to a once-usable state more reliably. 2. Use a virtual machine (like VMWare) to run a different OS without having to re-install your main OS. 3. Changing the hardware in your computer may qualify you for an OEM license of Windows XP which could be far cheaper than the upgrade.
