hi again,
i have just uploaded a beta version of the JAVA library (UI.JAR) to 
http://OmnipotenceSoftware.com/xx.zip ,
in which I *may* have corrected the problem which could cause 
browsers to crash (both FireFox & IE).

by accident, i discovered that FireFox writes a log upon every crash 
(in the FireFox folder).
though a bit cryptic, these logs implied that the problem may have been related
to my calls to a garbage collection routine (esp at page closings).
so this UI.JAR no longer makes these calls (assuming that the JAVA 
JRE will take care of such house-cleaning).

i repeatedly tested it by opening 20 edit pages and then closing them.
so i think this fixed the problem, but won't know for sure until i 
use it for a few days.

if you care to try this out, please report your findings.
