linux help needed

Hi all,
As I am doing some serious thrashing/hair-pulling, I am in bad need of a
consultant that knows Linux VERY well, and is willing to provide me extremely
explicit/literal directions to address the following persistent/annoying
problems:

1) I MUST to be able to transfer files to/from Win/Linux PCs (pref command
line).
I had this working to some degree (via Nautilis Network Server).
But since I rebooted, I only get "Nautilis cannot contact the smb
master browser"
     when I run smbclient.
So either I forgot some command that I entered previously, or I messed
something up.

btw, smbclient is supposed to give an ftp-like command prompt (can't
make it happen).

After much aggravation, I wrote 2 pgms to send/receive files via sockets
(thinking that would surely work). Not: Cannot connect to the Linux PC.
I assume that the firewall has something to do with it (though I can
ping to the IP).

Tried to disable firewall. Main pgm that does this is not on my PC
(though I installed
everything). Terminal pgm that does this accepts my inputs, yet does
nothing with
them (if I run it again, all is as it was).

2) I need step-by-step instructions on how to setup VNC, such that it displays
the entire desktop (not just a terminal window).

Will gladly pay for time. My sanity is worth it.

Thanks,

Mark Gilmore
