Making good progress now that I found a package->rpm cross reference at:
         http://ftp2.wss.yale.edu/rpm2html/ByName.html

Next problem:
In trying to install findutils, I get this:
         /sbin/install-info is needed by findutils-4.1.7-9
I tried creating this folder (under /cdrom), but it had no effect.
And there is no file in any of the RH9 CDROMs that is named anything like 
"install-info".

btw, I have ordered KNOPPIX and will be trying it out as well.
