Hi Mark,
the problem is likely the point in time when /etc/profile is executed -
at that point, X isn't really completely up and running (the X server
is, but the window manager is only started after login).
If you want to launch an X based application, you need to use X to start
it. Depending on which window manager you are using, that can be in
various different places. On RedHat 9, for instance, it would be
Preferences | More Preferences | Sessions. Then click on the Startup
Programs tab. I know it is somewhere else in RH 7.2/Gnome.
Alternately, you could also mess around with the
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d directory.
