No Knoppix experience here, but I can tell you how RedHat does it.
Almost all Linux systems do it very similarly. This mechanism originated
with Sys V, so most Unix versions use something very similar.
Rather than explain it in detail, let me point you to
LinuxFromScratch.org, where all this is explained quite well:

You may also want to do a "man init", where the early stages of the boot
process are described.
