KDE (and gnome) is not an "application" so it wouldn't show up in ps.
Rather, it is a set of libraries, a window manager, and some utilities.
Arguably the most important part is the window manager. When you log in
to your system, the login dialog lets you choose whether you want to run
KDE, Gnome or "Failsafe". There would also be ways to run any number of
other window managers, twm, fvwm, fluxbox, sawfish and RedHat 9 actually
uses Bluecurve, which is derived from Gnome. I am actually writing this
with a system using cygwin Multiwindow as my window manager. My Linux
box sits in the living room, and I am typing this on my Windows laptop
through an SSH tunnel - thus, Windows actually is my window manager.
Most of the time, as long as KDE (the set of libraries) is installed, a
KDE application will run fine even under Gnome, and vice versa. It
doesn't always work, though.
Gnome uses a mechanism somewhat similar to the Windows registry to store
system information, and buried somewhere in there, session startup
applications would also be stored. Needless to say, just as you would
not manipulate Windows registry files directly, you are not supposed to
touch these Gnome files, either. Use the application to manipulate it.
