In case anyone is interested, here is what did the trick:
         cd /home/mark/source/knx/KNOPPIX/etc/skel/.kde/Autostart
         ln -s /home/knoppix/ecs/startup.sh

where startup.sh contains:
         cd /home/knoppix/ecs
         konsole -e="ecs.bin"
