Mark,

It sounds like you are getting the system to boot, at least enough to get
access to /etc. If so, you can boot the system into a terminal by modifying
/etc/inittab. Change the line that reads:

id:5:initdefault:

to:

id:3:initdefault:

This tells the system to boot into run level 3, which is a terminal or
console mode. Run level 5 is the graphical mode.
