Mark,

If you are trying to recover RH9, you can use the RH9 installation disk.
Just hit F5 when CDROM boots.

Sorry for the confusion:
I meant to say that I was booting via a Knoppix CD,
so as to be able to access the files on my RH9 hard-disk.
Such sys recovery operations is one very good reason to have a Knoppix CD 
around :-).
Highly recommended.
