Hi Mark,
First, to boot into text mode, depending on whether you are using LILO
or GRUB, the procedure is slightly different, but the end result should
always be the same: pass the run level 3 on the command line.
If using LILO: when the boot prompt appears (I think it is a : IIRC.
Haven't used LILO in a long time), type "linux 3" and hit enter.
If using GRUB, select the kernel you want to boot as usual, then hit
"e". I think you then have to hit "e" a second time, and can edit the
kernel command line. Add the number 3 to the end of the line. Then hit
Enter, then "b" to boot.
OK, so this will boot RH into text mode without X. I think you will
probably still see the errors. If you can log in, I wouldn't worry too
much about the errors. Could you post your /var/log/dmesg file so I can
see more of the context?
To troubleshoot your X problem, check the files /var/log/XFree86.0.log
and ~/.xsession-errors .
As an unrelated aside, RedHat a few days ago announced that they are
going to discontinue support for RH 9 April 30, and from then on will
only make enterprise software. I'll probably switch to Suse at some
point in the foreseeable future.
