I can't tell you about the business opportunities, but I can tell you
about the technical side.

The basic added functionality is that it would provide a simple,
structured way to interface ECS to other home automation systems.
Basically, by providing a well-designed XML interface, you would provide
an API that others can write their applications to, including across the
Net.

As far as the business side goes, there are already efforts under way to
implement smart homes. Most of the examples you hear about are
nonsensical (the infamous "toaster controlling your heater" or the $8000
refrigerator with built-in PC, radio, TV and Internet connection that is
actually for sale here at Fry's), but I do think that many devices will
want to be able to talk to each other.

And having an XML interface - not just any XML interface; it has to
adhere to a standard DTD so other devices will be able to communicate -
will help you establish in this market.
