I have used IBM's Java on Linux.

It seems to be faster than Sun's, although I don't have any empirical
benchmarks.

I never paid anyone so I believe it is free. 

BTW, I believe Sun's efforts on Linux are provided by Blackdown
(www.blackdown.org).
