I have refilled HP and Canon cartridges. Canon is easier, because the
ink tanks are just tanks. The HPs have a smart cartridge that the
printer can check for refills. Epson looks similar to the Canon, but the
Canon has a removable head (I have had Epsons clog).
That said, I would go with the combo - buy a thin Canon LIde scanner and
a Canon printer. Total about $150. I like the Canon printers for speed.

(couldn't find the scanner on sale but it happens)

for an all in one.
Refilling is easy but messy. You have to drill a hole in the top of the
tank, the drill comes in a kit. When you refill it, the ink runs out of
the bottom until you can reseal the hole. Wear gloves, or lay in a stock
of Clorox, or both.

can anyone recommend a cheap/basic printer/scanner/copier that either
uses
low-cost cartridges
or cartridges that may be easily re-filled ?
thanks
